Frequently asked domestic questions answered:How do I identify my existing dome? There were two types of dome manufactured, the Basic and Deluxe. Only the larger Deluxe models are still available today. SOLARDOME® glasshouse Deluxe / Basic IdentificationFirstly find the size of your dome - (measurements are approximate, measure the inside diameter of the dome, across its base at ground level); secondly decide which type of dome you have from these photos. |

What are SOLARDOME® geodesic domes made of?
SOLARDOME® glasshouses are made from non corrosive mil finished aluminium components and 4mm toughened glass known for its clarity and strength. Domes have a powder coated finish to all exterior surfaces and all fittings are made with stainless steel to prevent rusting or moss build up. The domes are greater than 97.5% recyclable.
Why is a SOLARDOME® geodesic domes better for my plants?
It provides optimum light transmission, heat retention and superb ventilation - reducing temperature differential. The geodesic shape is the perfect shape for growing plants and is roughly 40% cheaper to heat than a square greenhouse or single glazed conservatory.
Do I need planning permission or building regulations for a SOLARDOME® geodesic dome in my garden?
Under normal circumstances, and if built further than 5m from the house, no planning permission is required in the UK for most of our domes. If closer than 5m to the house it is classed as an extension and standard allowances apply. None of the domes require building regulations if they are situated over a meter away from any boundaries. If you live in a listed building or an area of outstanding natural beauty and a conservation area, you will need to check with your local planning office.
Is it easy to assemble a SOLARDOME® geodesic dome yourself?
Yes, the assembly instructions are detailed, colour coded and carefully written. If you are any good at DIY you will find the dome easy to erect. Only basic hand tools are needed and a ladder or access tower depending on the size.
Do you need a solid base or foundation for a SOLARDOME® geodesic dome?
For longevity it is preferable to put the dome on a solid, level base of: concrete, patio slabs, or decking. At a minimum there must be a level solid base under the circumference of the dome's foundation plates if you are wanting to use it for growing.
Which dome fits over a spa?
All of our domes fit over at least a 6 person spa but most people choose the SD Haven or SD Retreat providing plenty of leisure space as well as the spa.
Can they be used as swimming pool covers?
Yes. You will need at least an SD Retreat dome. All of our domes are circular allowing room for plants or a seating area as well as a pool. They are also good for small exercise pools or spas above ground level. We do not provide standard elongated pool covers but do have partner companies we can put you in touch with if requested.
Is it easy to enter a SOLARDOME® geodesic dome in a wheelchair?
Yes. The entry has a very low sill which allows easy access for wheelchairs or wheelbarrows etc. The door is wide enough to accommodate most wheelchairs comfortably.
Do the glass panes break easily?
4mm toughened glass is now used as standard and is incredibly strong making breakage's highly unlikely even in extreme high winds this is due to the unique way the glass is held in the triangles and is never under tension.
Do the domes get really hot in summer?
It will get hot in the summer if the sun is out. However the Domes do not get as hot as standard shaped conservatories or greenhouses if all the ventilation is open. This is due to the location and number of vents. Ventilation is at base, mid and roof levels. In the sun when all the ventilation is open the normal difference in temperature between inside and out is about 7-10°C in the shade. This is much less than a standard glasshouse as the heat can escape.
Do SOLARDOME® glasshouses stay warm in winter?
In winter close down the windows and the dome will heat up several degrees, especially when it is very cold but the sun is out. You may still need a fan heater for the winter on cloudy days if you are using it to grow plants. Most people put electricity under the ground when they do the base to allow for appliances in the dome. It will require roughly 40% less heating in the winter than a standard greenhouse due to the geodesic shape with reduced overall volume for its area and that two panes of glass are always at right angles to the sun’s rays even in low winter sun so it heats up naturally.
How long does a SOLARDOME® glasshouse last?
Solardomes have been in production for 40 years and the original models are nearly all still going strong in peoples gardens across the UK. The current domes are made with non-corrosive materials and are virtually maintenance free. A Dome should last well over 30 years if looked after and can even be taken with you if you move house.
How do you clean them?
To keep them looking good a spring clean a few times a year is a good idea. We recommend washing them with a telescopic pole with a window cleaning kit attached or a jet power wash and a mop.
Can I have extra doors and windows?
Yes you can have up to 3 doors in a dome at a 72 degrees difference to each other.
You can put up to 5 vents in the roof per dome and as many side windows as required.
Can I build it on a wall?
Yes a small wall roughly 30cm high. It would need to be wide enough for the base plates to sit on roughly 23-30cm wide (refer to site prep info). It is advisable to only have one door if it is on a wall. We need to know if you are building it on a wall when the order is placed as you will require a bespoke longer door and doorframe to fit it.
Is it water proof?
If sealed properly around the nodal points and along the glazing bars when erecting the dome it will be water tight. It is designed to be an outdoor room so condensation may collect inside if the windows are shut and there is no heating or the base is not sealed/flashed. You are not advised to put soft furnishings or sensitive IT equipment in the dome overnight.
