Eco-friendly and Inspirational Show Dome Open Day
Mini-Edens create a storm in Southampton
A Hampshire based company focused on ‘getting back to nature’, and their guest of honour, The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Southampton, recently hosted local politicians, councillors and a BBC celebrity at an Open Day to help unveil their unique, eco-friendly and inspirational show domes!
Solardome Industries, a designer and manufacturer of glass geodesic domes, held their first Open Day on Thursday 29th March. The day started with a champagne reception in glorious sunshine outside their new offices, with the new smallest addition to their range of glasshouses, the 3.5m SOLARDOME® POD, as a backdrop to the proceedings. This was followed by an opening of the new indoor display area, lunch and a tour of the offices, factory and show domes. Pippa Bailey, Managing Director commented “We felt a display area was an essential addition to the business as you cannot appreciate just how wonderfully light and airy our domes are until you have stepped inside one – only then can you understand that unique inside, yet outside feel.”
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Southampton was there to open the new display area, of which the star is a dressed 8m SOLARDOME® Sanctuary and he and Pippa made speeches and toasts before cutting the red ribbon. Upon opening the show dome the Mayor said “The Mayoress and I are delighted to be invited here today to open these new premises and this magnificent (& it really is magnificent!) show dome. It is fantastic to see a local business growing and 2012 sounds like it is going to be an exciting year for Solardome Industries, especially with exports (that’s really marvellous!).”
Pippa’s speech conveyed an image of an ethical, family run UK design and manufacturing company using only British suppliers, but who export all over the world. It is a sustainable business that is encouraging the UK and our future generations to get back to nature and start growing their own. The domes are almost completely recyclable and don’t encourage our throw-away society, instead they last for decades in some of the most extreme climates worldwide.
The guest list included local politicians and councillors such MPs Caroline Nokes & Alan Whitehead and Chief Executive at Southampton City Council, Alistair Neil. Chris Collins, the BBC Blue Peter Gardener also made a special appearance. There was a mixture of guests from the educational, commercial and domestic sectors, plus existing customers, key contacts and suppliers. The guest list was varied to reflect the many different uses of the domes; Pippa talked about using them in your garden as an orangery, conservatory, spa cover or artist’s studio, in schools as a multipurpose space for outdoor learning, growing initiatives, performance arts or eco and Science projects and also in a number of commercial projects as butterfly houses, garden centre cafés and even in healthcare as tranquil environments and therapy gardens.
Finally Pippa talked about developments for the future; the company has just had an order for a large 15m dome for installation in North Norway which is enabling them to design a new system for larger professional domes up to 25m diameter. This will not only be for larger glass domes, but it will also open up wider opportunities with additional features such as double glazed or insulated panels to create a proper dome building. These could be used as a free standing, eco-friendly dome home, as a proper classroom, for boutique camping or even as a large performance space.
The guests were all very inspired by the day and many are now planning their own mini Eden projects; Solardome even gave them all a helping hand with gift bags full of growing goodies to take home! Mrs Lynch commented “the day was very well organised and the atmosphere very welcoming – nothing was too much trouble.” Mr & Mrs Lynch are hosting an Open Weekend in their 10m SOLARDOME® Paradise in Haverford West, Wales on 12/13th May.
