Solardome Industries Highly Commended at FSB Awards
Family-run firm came close second in race for innovation title
Geodesic dome specialist Solardome Industries was highly commended by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) at its WorldPay UK Business Awards in London on May 21st.
The Hampshire-based company came close to clinching the ‘Business Innovation of the Year’ category with its new SOLARDOME® PRO system, having previously won the South-East regional heat.
In fact, the category was so close this year, with just one point separating the top two entries, that the FSB introduced a ‘highly commended’ certificate for Solardome Industries as runner-up.
Pippa Bailey, who manages the family-run firm, said: “This is a great moment for everyone at Solardome Industries because it demonstrates that our investment in research and development is paying off.”
“We aim to give people more space to live and work in an environmentally friendly dome structure that is also aesthetically pleasing; therefore to be highly commended as an innovator in building design is thrilling.”
A spokesman for the FSB awards team said: “This year we received a 60% increase in entries, with almost 1,000 received, making it extremely difficult to judge due to the exceptional standard and high calibre of the entries.”
Judges heard how Solardome Industries initially developed their PRO architectural system for a project in northern Norway.
The brief was to protect a three-storey family home from high arctic winds and extreme snow events using a geodesic dome measuring 15 metres in diameter.
As a result, designers set about creating a new GEO-LOK nodal assembly system (international patent pending), which enables dome designs to be scalable up to a maximum of 25 metres in diameter using the same components.
Since the success of the project in Norway, Solardome Industries has constructed its first PRO system in the UK at Salford City College in Greater Manchester.
The design was specified by architects Cartwright and Gross to meet the college’s educational aims and objectives.
