Professor Bayliss, Wrexham, North Wales

A multi-purpose outdoor living space to observe a picturesque setting in all weathers…

You might think an outdoor conservatory in a mountainous area would be a recipe for disaster, but that’s where Solardome® glasshouses come in.

Professor Julian Bayliss lives on high ground in North Wales, which, despite its natural beauty, is often exposed to extreme weather conditions.

But as Julian already knew of Solardome Industries’ robust dome structures, he set about exploring their range of glasshouses that would allow him to admire the stunning scenery on his doorstep.

High-spec requirements

glasshouse in North WalesJulian has always enjoyed spending time in his garden, but when he lovingly restored a country chapel to be his home in Wrexham, he feared that relaxing outside might have to be limited to the summer months.

“As we live on a mountain, we needed a structure that would withstand the high winds and harsh conditions that such an environment offers,” said Julian.

And if he needed proof, Julian’s parents were able to demonstrate first-hand how well the structure could deal with extreme wind and snow loadings.

“My mother and father live in a similar area and have had an original Solardome® greenhouse for almost 50 years in their garden which has never blown down – this was one of the reasons I went for the Solardome® Haven,” he said.

A versatile solution

Dome interiorFor Julian, making the most of the spectacular views in his garden with family and friends was essential, which made Solardome’s modern geodesic design stand out as the best solution. He was also able to choose a brown finish so it would blend in well with nature.

The dome acts as a conservatory, summer house, winter house, playhouse, a place for stargazing and somewhere to wine and dine. It’s very versatile.

And after deciding to add a wood burner for those cold winter nights, the Solardome team were on hand to integrate a flue panel into the design and installation process.

“The main benefit of the dome is that we can now sit outside in all weathers at all times of the year and enjoy being immersed in nature. It’s great at night to watch the stars and the moon,” Julian said.

“My young daughter finds it a great place to play and visitors are always amazed by its design,” he added.
