Solardome® glasshouse dazzles pupils and staff at Sussex primary school.

Seal Primary Academy, based in Selsey near Chichester, were looking for a structure to maximise their outdoor grounds and act as a fun, additional space.

The school, which delivers a ‘relevant and exciting curriculum’ to 400 pupils at key stage 1 and 2 level, enquired with Solardome Industries in 2018 about their glasshouse range.

Learning through play

After considering several options in the Growing Schools range, they chose the Solardome® Haven, which, at 4.6m in diameter, can hold up to 20 pupils at a time.

“We are so pleased with the Haven! It’s being put to good use on a regular basis for our SEN classes and play therapy, as well as breakout phonics sessions,” said Suzanne.

Maximal engagement

The impressive geodesic dome, which sits proudly in the school field, was quickly kitted out with laminate flooring, tables and multi-coloured pillows and mats.

“Teachers have told me how much more receptive and engaged the children are when they are being taught in this modern outdoor environment,” said Suzanne.

It’s amazing how much the pupils are benefitting from the additional space!

A community effort

Suzanne and the team invited Solardome and the fundraising organisations to the grand opening in November 2019, which was attended by Solardome’s Operations Manager Gary Mitchell.

“Having installed the Haven earlier in the year, it was great to see the dome in full operation, and being enjoyed by the kids, within such a short space of time,” said Gary.

“It’s amazing how much the pupils are benefitting from the additional indoor-outdoor space in the school,” Suzanne added.

The glass dome was funded by The Lions, Ferry Farm, The Southern Co-op and Tesco Bags of Help.
