Solardome Industries is very proud to have been involved in helping BBC Children in Need as part of a BBC 1 special programme: “DIY SOS: The Big Build”.

The programme features the renovation of a centre for children with additional needs in Edinburgh. The Yard helps children and young people from 3 to 25. It is an indoor and outdoor space that welcomes the whole family. This year the centre celebrates 25 years of helping families deal with the demands of daily life, giving the young people a space to develop their confidence and encouraging them to make lasting friendships.

The Yard receives a grant towards its costs from BBC Children in Need, but the building and its outdoor space were in desperate need of a total overhaul. Solardome Industries donated a SOLARDOME® Retreat (6m diameter) to BBC Children in Need to provide a stunning focal point for the gardens. It creates not only an area for the children to retreat to in the cold, wet and windy weather, but also a shelter for the parents to sit and relax, and have some well-earned respite whilst watching their children at play. The dome has been furnished with seating and plants and can be used for growing, play sessions, quiet time and arts and crafts. It can even be used for the Yard’s evening clubs as LED lights have been installed throughout the interior.

Celine Sinclair, Chief Executive of The Yard said:  “The make-over of The Yard has made such an enormous difference to all our visitors and staff. For example in the outdoor area the Solardome® glasshouse is not only a stunning centre-piece, but it means the parents can now watch their children at play in warmth and comfort and with a 360° degree view. It is also somewhere completely different and inspiring for the kids. The dome can even be used for our evening clubs as a whole lighting system has been installed.”

The build took ten days from the end of September to the beginning of October. In all over three hundred people helped transform both building and outdoor play area. Though the days were long and the work demanding the experience of taking part was very fulfilling. The Solardome team, who drove all the way from Southampton, had lots of fun, not just building the dome, but also helping wherever it could.

Pippa Bailey Managing Director at Solardome Industries described the experience as “great fun to be practically involved with such a worthwhile cause at The Yard.  On the reveal day, it was a joy to see so many happy, smiling and excited faces, not only the children, but also on the parents, staff and volunteers. It was inspirational to see how the SOLARDOME® Retreat will be used and valued in the years to come and we are very proud to be part of such an amazing achievement.”

DIY SOS: The Big Build Children in Need Special aired on BBC1 at 8pm on Wednesday 14th November.
